Helping children with big feelings
Co-regulate first, teach later.
In the moment
- Stay close and calm — your nervous system is their anchor.
- Name it: "You're really frustrated."
- Keep words few; offer comfort or space.
Later, when calm
- Talk about what happened, without blame.
- Practise a coping tool together.
- Praise effort, not just outcome.
