Guide for families
Neuro-affirming basics
- • Differences, not deficits: autism, ADHD, dyslexia and more are different ways of being.
- • Stimming is regulating — don't stop safe stims.
- • Meltdowns aren't tantrums; they're overwhelm. Safety and calm first, talk later.
Communicating well
- • Be clear and literal; avoid sarcasm when stressed.
- • Give processing time — count to 10 before repeating.
- • Offer choices of two, and accept non-speaking answers (cards, typing, gestures).
Handling change
- • Warn before transitions: 10 min, 5 min, 1 min.
- • Use visual schedules and 'first/then'.
- • Preview new places with photos or videos.
For siblings & parents
- • Explain differences honestly to siblings and give them one-on-one time too.
- • Parents' own neurodivergence matters — many discover theirs through their child.
- • Find your people: local support groups and neurodivergent-led communities.
